Brief Description | This module will develop students' understanding of illustration concepts, practices and procedures, and illustrative requirements of the advertising industry. |
Indicative Syllabus | Students will gain an understanding of the structure of the illustration industry, its ethics, procedures and practices, exploring illustrative concepts in relation to advertising. Topics such as the relevance of image styles to target audience, illustration use versus photography, and the historical uses of illustration in advertising and brand identity will be explored. The module will also develop the students' ability to interpret a creative brief, create marker visuals, and produce finished illustrations, taking them through to print-ready production. A series of lectures and workshops will supply the core information and a practical "real world" project will enable students to expand, evaluate, and demonstrate their knowledge and skills. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1. Recognise the creative and aesthetic potential of illustration as communication and the implications for successful art direction and campaign development. 2. Appreciate the interaction between illustrators, designers and art directors, and their objectives in terms of visual style, audience communication and working on brief to set deadlines. 3. Appreciate the breadth of the illustration industry, its structure, applications, procedures, practices and ethics. 4. Identify and develop the skills necessary for effective illustration for art direction, understanding what makes a successful advertising illustration. 5. Develop skills in research, reference collecting, creative thinking, problem solving, image making for both digital and traditional illustration forms. |
