Brief Description

This module aims to identify and explore the means through which artists/designers use publication as an expressive vehicle and one through which to promote their practice.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will consider the role of the book (in its widest possible sense) within contemporary design practice.

The emphasis will be upon finding publication methods appropriate to different disciplines, applications, contexts and subject matter.

This will include an exploration and evaluation of both hand-made and digital production.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1.   Critically examine and analyse the cultural and professional context of self- publishing and assess its value in relation to their chosen discipline.

2.   Demonstrate a practical understanding of the technical requirements involved in printing (analogue and digital), publishing and binding.

3.   Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the markets for artist published books and of the associated ethics, responsibilities and practices, within art and design contexts. 

4.   Integrate the role of research as underpinning the formulation and synthesis of their ideas, exploring and evaluating methodologies, theories and ideas.

Demonstrate competence and understanding of book production skills including page layout, pagination, imposition and binding.
