Brief Description

A series of lectures and seminars will take place which aim to contextualise the concept of undertaking a Dissertation and/or Major Project at Level 6 as well as linking theory and research to practical projects.

Students will prepare a Dissertation and/or Major Project proposal outlining the focus of their research and/or visual exploration and development.

Indicative Syllabus p>Lectures and seminars introduce students to a range of examples where theoretical and philosophical ideas intersect with practice. 

 

Students engage with self-initiated areas of investigation to develop a detailed Dissertation and/or Major Project proposal that outlines the focus and strategy for their continued individual research and/or creative exploration at Level 6.

 

Topics relevant to progressing high quality research and academic skills, such as library and internet research skills, primary and secondary source research methodologies, and constructing a debate or argument will be covered.

Learning Outcomes

1. Generate ideas and produce a viable proposal for the production of a substantial body of work at Level 6.

2. Show initiative in developing key themes and areas of research.

3. Demonstrate good research skills that impact upon the proposed outcome.

4. Demonstrate an ability to manage and integrate information from a wide range of sources.

5. Demonstrate an ability to critically review, consolidate and extend a systematic body of knowledge utilising specialised skills and knowledge.

6. Use appropriate theoretical models to judge the significance of collected research, and recognise the boundaries or limitations of the enquiry.
