Brief Description | This first double module provides a solid foundation at the start of the course introducing creative and technical skills and giving an overview of contemporary Editorial and Advertising photography, its applications, techniques and practitioners. This module develops creative thinking, introduces professionalism, and develops technical, research, communication and presentation skills. It also establishes self-driven active learning. |
Indicative Syllabus | An introduction to contemporary creative photography for newspapers, magazines, publishing and design groups. Introduction to how modern Advertising Agencies work with their clients and the roles within an agency. Overview of the use of photography in the Advertising Industry and contemporary advertising techniques, above and below the line advertising, viral, in store and mailer advertising. Overview of key photographers and embedding the underpinning of Photographic Practice with the introduction of research methodologies, professionalism and ethics. Development of creative thinking, ideas generation, brief solving and shooting to fit a layout. Understand possible careers paths in Editorial and Advertising Photography and engage with graduate ambition. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
1) understand the wide variety of use of photography as a means of communication and its applications in the contemporary Editorial & Advertising Industry and have an overview and analysis of the work of key practitioners. 2) appreciate the relationship between copy and image in both editorial & advertising photography. 3) understand independent creative thinking, ideas generation and problem solving to be able to meet a defined brief and deadline. 4) understand the difference between and uses of lighting equipment and various formats of cameras, both film and digital. 5) can make informed judgments and opinions of your own and other’s work and reflect on past learning and undertake personal skills audits and skills action planning. 6) understand possible careers paths within Editorial & Advertising and engage with graduate ambition. |
