Brief Description

This module provides an introduction to the basic concepts, theory and practice of animation design and production as it used as an illustrative medium. Students will work from concept stage and the development of sequences, storyboarding and flipbooks demonstrating different aspects of movement and timing.

Students will realise ideas with experimental outcomes in various formats including animation software.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will be introduced to sketchbook and animated flipbook techniques as a means of applying simple animation concepts. The module will include a basic introduction to the development and history of animation from the early 19th century to modern digitally animated films. The module will provide an overview of a variety of styles of animation and how animation has been utilised over the 20th century to the present. Principles of animation covered will include: the development of narrative, scripting, research and drawing for animation, storyboarding, backgrounds, keyframes, movement, characterisation and the linking of sound and image.

Workshops will include instruction in Adobe software –with opportunities for Adobe accreditation

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

Demonstrate the application of the principles involved in animating images and/or objects

Use  a variety of animation methods, materials and production techniques including digital software

Critically examine and analyse the cultural and technical contexts of past and contemporary animation practice

Utilise methods of narrative construction and story development to create storyboards and animated sequences

Integrate image and sound in time-based media to effectively communicate ideas.
