Brief Description

This module will survey the evolution of modern art from the second half of C20 through to contemporary practice and examine key issues, objects and debates.  A range of critical approaches to the visual analysis of art works will be introduced.

Indicative Syllabus -

Key developments in Western art following WW2 through to the present day will be examined, including work in painting, sculpture, photography, film, video and installation. The critical grouping of artists and works under such terms as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism and Conceptual Art will be considered in relation to specific works of art and exhibitions.

The theories and practices associated with late Modernism and Postmodernism will be examined.

Students will be encouraged to develop skills in writing about art and to discuss their ideas around set themes relating to the lecture programme or to current exhibitions of art. Students will develop their skills of visual analysis and understanding of theoretical approaches including, formal analysis, semiotics and contextual analysis.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the key developments, themes and concepts in the production and consumption of art in the second half of C20 and early C21
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the ideas of Modernism and Postmodernism
  3. Demonstrate an ability to locate key works of modern and contemporary art in their historical and critical context
  4. Demonstrate oral and written skills in analysis and interpretation of artworks
  5. Demonstrate the ability to engage with critical theory and abstract concepts
