Brief Description

This module enables students to use knowledge and understanding gained in the previous drawing module to integrate skills and practice into a subjective framework. As such, methods of drawing are established as a mean of investigation, enquiry, analysis, construction and communication. Research and investigation into an initial source of experience or concern will allow students to develop a substantial body of sustained and explorative drawing.

 

This body of work should demonstrate understanding of formal drawing skills and techniques, as well as an engagement with enquiry and the development of visual solutions. The work will utilise practical skills and will also demonstrate the acquisition of an independent critical standpoints. Students will work with and develop approaches, which are appropriate to their aims, whether objective, subjective or conceptual.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will explore and develop the practice of drawing across a wide range of media and applications. Drawing exercises/projects will continue to build upon the practise of formal drawing skills, which could include drawing from the figure, location site specific, both documentary, fictional compositions and analytical object drawing. 

The work will involve the development of preliminary studies, working drawings, visual research and reference work. There will be an expectation to engage actively with a wide variety of documentary research, such as notebooks, sketchbooks, photography and to engage with other artists work through meaningful discussion and group seminars.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

1.     Apply and integrate Drawing into personal and subjective frameworks:  Apply drawing skills, knowledge and understanding gained through AD4007, to personal and subjective frameworks.

2.     Extend Drawing practice to self-initiated modes and means: Develop Drawing practice as a self-initiated mode of visual expression, exploration and communication. Coherently engage in an on-going use of the medium of Drawing as a route to creative thinking and making.

3.     Reflect on own Drawing process in order to set personal goals: Use visual skills and developing visual awareness, to evaluate own process in order to set personal goals and develop effective working objectives.

4.     Examine, question and test Drawing: Examine, question and test the boundaries of drawing practice, acknowledging varied, unconventional and ambitious modes of production.

5.     Understand and use relevant contextual references: Understand and make use of contextual references and influences, including environmental, cultural, historical and contemporary arenas.
