Brief Description

This module aims to introduce students to the different visual strategies used by photographers to convey meaning. It aims to help students learn to speak about photography in a meaningful way, and to engage with the messages and meanings in images.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will help students to develop their image analysis skills by investigating the construction of the image. Formal elements to the image, including lighting, framing, and depth of field, will be considered along with context and narrative as generators of meaning. Others concepts such as genre and conventions will also be addressed. The ultimate aim of the module is to understand the means by which photographs communicate meaning and the ways in which photographers can play with those devices to shape meaning.
