Brief Description | This module aims to introduce students to the different visual strategies used by photographers to convey meaning. It aims to help students learn to speak about photography in a meaningful way, and to engage with the messages and meanings in images. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will help students to develop their image analysis skills by investigating the construction of the image. Formal elements to the image, including lighting, framing, and depth of field, will be considered along with context and narrative as generators of meaning. Others concepts such as genre and conventions will also be addressed. The ultimate aim of the module is to understand the means by which photographs communicate meaning and the ways in which photographers can play with those devices to shape meaning. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1. Develop the ability to look at an image and identify the mechanisms employed to convey meaning, both in terms of form and content 2. Understand the relationships between the use of visual devices and viewers 3. Have a critical awareness of how visual media communicates 4. Have an ability to conduct a visual analysis and deconstruct the communication process of photographs |
