Brief Description

This module will enable students to undertake a project based upon a topic/issue arising from their work placement and reflect on the value and role of their work placement experience in their future development.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will provide a mechanism to explore issues arising from the period of work placement. Following consideration of approaches for reflective practice and examining experiences and learning from period of work placement, students will undertake an individual project. Details will be approved on an individual basis but all students will be required to demonstrate through their study an understanding of the relevant theory. Students will also be required to reflect on the value and role of the placement period and project on their personal and career development.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) identify and reflect critically on the role and value of their placement experience in relation to their learning and personal development.
b) clearly define and justify a business problem in relation to the work placement organisation
c) analyse and evaluate in depth one organisationally rooted problem or situation
d) demonstrate ability to structure a problem in context
e) discover, select, understand, analyse, synthesise and evaluate information from a variety of sources such as primary and secondary data, and academic, professional and trade literature
f) develop and critically apply concepts and theories acquired throughout their programme of study
g) communicate and present their ideas coherently, paying attention to clarity of argument and supporting evidence 



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Communication and literacy: by producing a piece of written work that uses appropriate language, diagrams and tables to evaluate concepts presented in the literature and that communicates their own ideas.
Problem solving: through the identification of a pertinent business issue; formulating an appropriate strategy to address this issue; developing conclusions and/or recommendations as a result of their research.
Independent learning and working:
through completing a self-directed piece that necessitates self-reliance, planning, flexibility, managing information, self-criticism, reflection and resilience.
Information and communications technology: by, at a minimum, presenting material that meets the requirements for the format and layout of the dissertation.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 3% (max. 4 hours): Learning will be facilitated through module tutor inputs and their meetings with tutor.

Student directed learning: 97%, including reading, investigation and other tasks, which will vary according to the individual topic.

002: 70% Coursework: Project: 3000 words or equivalent
