Brief Description |
Twelve months work based learning. Work experience based full-time in an organisation with roles relevant to the academic programme of study and at an appropriate level of responsibility. |
Indicative Syllabus |
Twelve-month period of work experience relevant to the student's field of study. Learning driven by practical experience in the work place. Progress and development assessed against an agreed framework of objectives. |
Learning Outcomes |
i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be able to: a) Appreciate a business/organisation, its products and/or services and how it earns money and remains viable. b) Understand the inter-relationship between different business functions. c) Carry out company based tasks, of an appropriate level relevant to their studies, with minimal supervision. d) Better understand the sector they are working within and the external and internal influencers and constraints. e) Gain an appreciation of the range of professional skills appropriate to a specific employment sector.
ii. Skills By the end of the module students should have developed skills in: Communication and literacy: via verbal and written communication in the workplace and the assessment. Independent learning and working: unsupervised, work-based activities. Working with others: teamwork activities in the work place. Problem solving: through solving both day to day or project based problems. Personal development Skills: Personal evaluation, action planning, career management. |
Learning and Teaching Activities |
Staff/student contact: approx. 10% Pre-placement briefing sessions Initial contact via telephone and/or e-mail Two visits by tutor University based Mid Placement Seminar Ongoing support as required.
Student directed learning: approx. 90% Learning predominantly student driven through agreed learning objectives. |
