Brief Description

This module examines the theoretical background of the UK taxation system and provides students with a practical introduction to the major direct taxes.

Indicative Syllabus

An evaluation of the purpose and constraints of the UK taxation system and an introduction to the structure and operation of income tax, capital gains tax and corporation tax.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Evaluate the political and economic constraints which determine the nature of a taxation system
b) Evaluate the effect of recent Budget proposals on direct tax burden of taxpayers
c) Apply the rules of income tax to tax computations for individuals and sole trader businesses
d) Determine the tax liability of corporations
e) Distinguish between accounting and taxable profit and examine the potential effects of capital expenditure
f) Interpret the rules relating to disposals of capital assets



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Application of numerical techniques: Use of basic arithmetic, percentages, fractions
Problem solving: Mini case studies
Communication and literacy: EssayWorking with others: Small group activities in tutorials
Specific vocational skills: This module is vocationally specific in that it introduces students to the impact of taxation upon their future income and the taxation obligations and considerations of their future employers
