Brief Description

The module develops an understanding of basic accounting practice and financial systems. Students will prepare and appraise financial reports using appropriate software. Financial systems as tools of management decision making will be evaluated.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will examine how a business records, monitors and controls its financial progress using both manual and computer assisted techniques.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
a) operate an accounts system package for a range of regular transactions over a short period of business
b) develop a deeper understanding of the range and value of financial application packages appropriate to a normal business
c) perceive the implications of advancing technology on business.



ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students will have developed skills in:
Application of numerical techniques: inspection of the financial package results to ensure correct application.
Problem solving: use of a financial package to process and report on a month’s transactions. Working with others: during the group assignment.
Specific vocational skills: experience with the accounts package will prepare the students for careers in accounting or information technology where knowledge of finance systems is important.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 35% approx., including lectures and practical lab work.
Student private study: 65% approx., including group work and lab work.
