Brief Description

This module aims to develop a critical understanding of the way in which the law acts as a framework for the management of business organisations and imposes particular duties on managers.

Indicative Syllabus

Business liability in negligence; criminal law of health and safety; legal implications of types of business unit; company law: formation of limited companies, meetings, shares, directors.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Assess an organisation's liability in negligence for people, premises, and for products.
b) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of business organisations
c) Analyse the legal issues involved in the management of limited companies including their formation, how they can be changed.



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Problem solving: Mini case studies involving the application of complex legal rules. The assignment and exam will also test this skill.
Communication and literacy: oral communication by answering questions, making presentations and problem solving in tutorials; written assignment and examination
Information and communications technology: Use of word processing packages. Working with others: small group activities in tutorials.
Specific vocational skills: This module exposes students to the business legal environment which has an impact on the management of a business.
