Brief Description

This module is a study of the way a Stock Market functions and how share prices are determined. The principal aim of the module is to explore key concepts such as efficiency, risk, governance and behaviour from a Stock Market perspective. After taking this module, students` should have a good understanding of some of the important ideas about share prices and what they suggest about company performance and approaches to investment. This understanding is relevant for a number of finance and strategy modules in the third year.

Indicative Syllabus

Importance of stock markets to companies; stock market operations and share prices; unique and market risks; corporate governance.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Appraise why stock markets are important to companies
b) Evaluate the way in which stock markets function
c) Understand why share prices move
d) Analyse the theoretical importance of Efficient Market Hypothesis and behavioural models of stock markets
e) Understand the concept of company and market risk
f) Evaluate the main corporate governance issues facing managers and shareholders of companies



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Application of numerical techniques: in assessing stock market performance
Problem solving: through analysing company share price and activity
Working with others: in group seminar activity
